Safe + Sound Week 2018: Out Of The Box Approaches For Talking Safety
Safe + Sound Week is OSHA’s nationwide event to raise awareness and understanding of the value of safety and health programs that include management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards in workplaces. If you visit the OSHA website, you’ll find numerous safety related resources available to you and your team. In addition to these great resources, Safe + Sound week is an excellent time to think outside the box to use creative ways to discuss safety. Here are a couple different ways you can do just that.
Switch Roles In Safety Discussions
Many times on job sites, safety is a concept discussed by team leaders to team members. During this week, try having team members lead safety discussions. This gives them a feeling of empowerment, knowing their voices matter, while giving team leaders great insight into the level of commitment and understanding of safety practices employees have. Team leaders should still address any necessary topics that may be left out by daily discussion leaders.
Make Safety Fun
Safety is an important and serious topic regardless of the industry. This doesn’t mean it can’t be addressed in a lighthearted manner in certain scenarios. To change up the standard Toolbox Talk, try incorporating a game into your safety discussion. There are a number of fast moving, highly interactive games that revolve around safety. If you’re looking for inspiration, our game Safety Feud is an example of how you can address safety topics in a game-like setting.
