A world-class program takes the next step with off the job safety
If you want to see what a company can accomplish with a laser focus on safety, you need to look no further than National Steel City, a leading steel construction and erection company.
Under the leadership of CEO Bob Dunn, National Steel City has created a world-class safety program that includes site orientation for all employees, daily toolbox safety meetings, and weekly foreman and project-wide mass safety meetings and of course regular and frequent inspections in addition to many other safety programs and policies.
The result is an OSHA recordable incident rate approximately five times lower than the industry average.
Now National Steel City is taking its commitment even further by expanding its program to include off-the-job safety. The program is called SAWHORSE, which stands for Safety At Work, Home, Office, Recreation, Safety Everywhere.
The launch of this program recognizes a very important issue in safety – the vast majority of accidents involving workers occur when they are off the job. Yet the costs are still there, in the form of pain and suffering for workers and their families, lost time and insurance claims.
National Steel City’s safety awareness 24/7 program will include training and safety communications to employees. SAWHORSE is launching at the Electric Power conference April 21-23 in Rosemont, Ill.
